5 Signs That You’re in Need of Stucco Repair
The benefits of choosing stucco for your home are numerous and include things like longevity, ease of maintenance, and fire-resistant properties.
However, stucco can begin to show signs of wear and tear over time and may need repair.
How do you know if this is the case, though?
Keep reading to find out what the signs are that you’re in need of stucco repair:
1. Discoloration
If you find that your stucco has become discolored, this can be a sign that moisture has found a way to soak in behind the stucco.
You can spot discoloration by patches that are darker than your original stucco color, or you may actually have patches of dark brown or black.
In the case that these brown or black spots are appearing, especially around things like windows, it may indicate a bigger problem related to mildew or mold. If this is happening, stucco repair will be needed.
2. Gaping On Door and Window Edges
Gaping or holes that are located in between or around windows are oftentimes caused by stucco installation that was not done properly.
These issues may not be immediately visible, but over time they can become more and more prevalent and contribute to other problems with your stucco.
3. Drying Unevenly
Stucco is a durable material that stands up to the weather well. If your stucco doesn’t dry evenly after it gets wet, this can indicate a problem beneath the stucco.
Typically stucco should absorb the moisture from rain and the like and allow it to evaporate off in a uniform manner. If you notice that some patches are taking a lot longer to dry, you may need to consider stucco repair.
4. Cracks and Crumbling
Over time, it’s pretty normal to see some small cracking along your stucco. What isn’t normal is large, obvious cracks or spots of stucco that are crumbling and coming off completely.
If your stucco is crumbling and buckling, it’s an indicator of moisture damage and it will need to be addressed before it gets worse.
5. Efflorescence
Efflorescence is a fancy word for deposits of salt that can show up on your stucco if it is retaining moisture.
These salt deposits usually begin to show up near the bottom edges of your stucco where it touches the earth or around drainpipes and gutters. This happens because excess water seeps into the stucco and once it finally dries the salt residue stays behind. When this process happens multiple times it will begin leaving noticeable deposits.
To prevent efflorescence, ensure your stucco is properly cured and keep excess moisture from things like sprinklers off of your stucco.
